GENESIS

A Dream Takes Shape

In the 2010s, composer Virginie Aster travelled to Africa in pursuit of a musical dream :

bringing together the violin, the emblematic instrument of the Western classical tradition, with the most authentic rhythms of West Africa.Through her travels and encounters, she immersed herself in this oral tradition, convinced that the voice of the violin would naturally resonate with the deep sound of African drums.

Gradually, the project took shape. The wood of the violin and the horsehair of the bow met the wood of the drums and the skin of their membranes. An encounter that revealed itself as self-evident and led the composer back to her own origins and to the essence of humanity.

Ève Noire – an ode to the primal being, the universal mother – was born.
